Hill House, Salisbury, Connecticut
Located near Mount Washington State Forest, a 1927 French Norman home overlooks a sweeping pasture, formal gardens, and a re-imagined service area with a kitchen garden, greenhouse, and caretaker’s barn. Originally a working farm, including an electric generating station, the property’s history is a testament to the careful improvements requested by the client, a family dedicated to ecological responsibility. The greenhouse was to be protected by a tall brick wall, in the same fashion as the historic walls throughout the property. The design envisioned an improved functionality and beautification of supporting spaces. Additionally, all construction materials were to be non-plastic, salvaged, and sustainably harvested. While the project was not completed, the project challenged our understanding of contemporary building methods and materials within a regionally significant historic property.
